Marei Keramik vintage fat lava chimney vase, made in West Germany circa 1970s.

Simply marked '2004' on base, this number refers to the catalogue number of this rectangular chimney style from the 1970s. It is a lovely example of postwar West German 'Fat Lava' pottery with its thick, encrusted glaze resembling frozen lava flows in radioactive hues. The base is a matte off-white colour, with glossy tones of fuschia (purple/pink) and brown over the top. Sturdy rectangular form with an oval hole offset to one side. The top opening has a small lip and is also oval shaped. The colour inside the opening is a cobalt blue/purple.

Condition:
In excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or damage.

Measurements:
25.5cm tall x 12cm wide x 6.5cm deep = approx 10.25" x 4.75" x 2.5"
Oval opening: 5.3cm x 2.5cm at top edge.

Other sculptural ceramic styles also available, as shown in last image.

Little is known about the history of Marei Keramik, however, what is known is that part of it began when Emons & Söhne was founded in 1921 in Rheinbach. The company was split in 1948 (due to financial difficulties resulting from the war) and this split formed two factories (ES and Marei). ES was run by Josef Emons and Marei run by Jean Fuss. The name Marei was derived from Majolika Fabrik Rheinbach.
