The Kosta glassworks was founded in 1742 in the Swedish province of Småland. The name was created from the surnames of the founders, Generals Koskull and Staël von Holstein. Fine utility glassware was made here during the first 150 years of the company’s existence. In 1898 the company began to employ designers to make more artistic pieces.
Today’s Kosta Boda was formed through a merger of the glassworks in the communities of Kosta, Boda and Åfors. The company name was changed to Kosta Boda AB in 1976, and the company has been part of Orrefors Kosta Boda AB since 1989.
Born in 1904, Vicke Lindstrand was a Swedish designer who is considered among the most influential 20th-century glass artists. He is considered a pioneer of Swedish glass art and was Artistic Director at Kosta from 1950-1973 after working at Orrefors from 1928-1940 and Upsala Ekeby from 1942-1950.
