Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg small stoneware vase - Sweden 1965

Mid-century vintage Berndt Friberg design for Gustavsberg small stoneware vase, made in Sweden in 1965.

Base is matte brown, incised with Friberg, g, and the 'G-Hand'. The small g stands for production year 1965. This is a rare collector's item of iconic Swedish design. Lovely glossy oxblood coloured glaze with irregular green spots and a beige/green slightly fluted neck. Squat form, with four sides, rounded corners.

Condition:
In very good vintage condition. Unfortunately there is a chip on the top lip (7mm x 4mm; half of it is just glaze, and half includes a shallow part of the clay body). On the other side of the top rim is a 1mm glaze fleck. There are a few light scuffs on the piece, but minimal. Please see photos. In mint condition this piece demands a much higher price.

9.8cm tall x 7cm wide and deep = approx 4" x 2.75"
Round opening is 2cm diameter at top edge.

Berndt Friberg was a renowned Swedish stoneware artist. He began working for Gustavsberg in 1934 and eventually developed a reputation as the master of Chinese inspired modern ceramics. He worked at the Gustavsberg factory until his death in 1981. Friberg hand-threw many of his own pieces but also produced a series of designs that were made in small production runs by the Gustavsberg studio in the 1950s and 60s. His works are rare and collectible and remain in high demand.

Gustavsberg is a Swedish porcelain company that originated in 1826 and continued production until it broke up in the 1990s.
