Arne Bang is one of the most important figures in 20th Century Danish design. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy in 1929, he joined Holmegaard and began a stoneware line at the glassworks. Around 1938, Bang began to establish himself as an independent stoneware artist, producing under his own signature and gradually separating himself from Holmegaard. The ribbed stoneware for which Arne Bang is recognised emerged as an evolution of his earlier, more organic style.
During the 1930s, the signature on Arne Bang’s stoneware evolved from the stylized “HG” for Holmegaard GlassWorks to the stylized “AB” which appears on most of his stoneware output. While most works bear the painted version of his signature, more unique, studio pieces bear an incised version.
