Heinrich Fuchs for Hutschenreuther vintage bisque porcelain op art artichoke vase from the Archais series, made in Bavaria, Germany in late 60s or early 70s.
Hutschenreuther lion mark and engraved Fuchs on base. The design of the lion mark indicates the date of production was in the late 60s or early 70s. Style no. 6144 impressed on bottom. Matte white surface with raised multi nodular geometric and linear etched Op art relief creating the Artichoke appearance. Only the base has a glossy finish and the interior is glazed. Highly recognisable and collectible example of modernist Op Art style.
Condition:
In beautiful vintage condition. Some subtle contact marks, hard to avoid on white matte porcelain of this age. Some small indentations, hard to tell whether they are from production or wear. They do not detract from the beauty of the piece. See photos for details and feel free to contact with any concerns before purchase.
Measurements:
19cm tall x approx 17cm diameter (at widest point) = approx 7.5" x 6.75"
Circular opening: 3.5cm diameter
Other Hutschenreuther Archais pieces also available, as shown in last image.
The original Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factory was founded by Carolus Magnus in Hohenburg, Bavaria, in 1814. A second factory was established by his son Lorenz in Selb, Germany, in 1857.
Lorenz had not partnered with his father and the two companies remained fully independent and in open competition with each other for more than a century but in 1969 the two became one when the Selb company purchased the assets of the Hohenburg factory. The company was renamed Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb. The mark changed through the years, but the name and the lion insignia appear in most versions which helps to date the pieces. Hutschenreuther became part of the Rosenthal division of the Waterford Wedgwood Group in 2000.
Heinrich Fuchs is renowned for his modernist designs, in particular his legendary Archais series of vases.
