Vintage ceramic footed bowl by Mari Simmulson for Upsala-Ekeby, made in Sweden between 1958-59.

Upsala-Ekeby Sweden and style number are impressed inside the foot on the base. This is model 4361 from the Trinidad series. The underside and edge is glazed in smooth off-white. The inside of the bowl had cuts radiating from the centre point. The textured dark brown clay is partially coated with a minty green glaze which settles to it's deepest colour inside the cut stripes. Beautiful undulating edge with rounded triangular shape. The bowl sits on a short foot. An excellent collector's item of mid-century modern Scandinavian design.

Mari Simmulson (1911-2000) was a renowned Swedish ceramic designer of the 20th century. In 1945 she began working at Gustavsberg alongside the factory’s legendary leader, Wilhelm Kage. Mari left Gustavsberg in 1949, taking a position at Upsala-Ekeby. Together with Hjordis Oldfors and Ingrid Atterberg, she completed a trio of influential female designers who set the tone for the company in the 50s. Mari would remain at the factory until 1972, designing a variety of dishware, vases, wall plates, bowls, and figurines. She often opted for bold, colourful decor, offering a clear contrast to dark, unadorned pottery. Her work is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.

Upsala-Ekeby AB was a porcelain, tile, brick, and glass company founded in 1886 in Uppsala, Sweden. The factory ceased operations in 1980.
