Vintage Munising wooden butter or dough bowl, made in Michigan circa 1930s.
Made of maple wood, this is a beautifully preserved medium bowl. It has been used for years to churn butter or for making dough (markings inside bowl reflect this tradition-see photos). The shape is slightly warped from years of use, adding to the charm and character of the bowl. It has a subtle lip at the outside edge. This bowl is a lovely example of rustic farmhouse decor which would make a stunning fruit bowl or centrepiece.
Condition:
It is in excellent condition with no cracks - rare for a vintage wooden bowl. It was machine-lathed from a solid piece of maple wood. The wood has developed a lovely patina with a rich depth of colour from years of use. Deep signs of age and wear make this is a unique rustic piece.
Measurements:
Slightly irregular shape approx 6.2cm tall x 26cm wide x 24cm deep = approx 2.5" x 10.25" x 9.5"
Many more wooden bowls of various sizes also available, some shown in last image.
The Munising Woodenware Factory was established in Munising, Michigan in 1911. With a focus on wooden kitchenware of all varieties, Munising operated until 1955 when it was no longer able to compete with the introduction of plastic and inexpensive wooden imports. Vintage pieces can now be found throughout the country and have become highly collectible. They are not only a bit of Munising history, but also a piece of American memorabilia.
