Vintage ceramic bowl for Saxbo, made in Denmark circa 1950s. Thrown by Sigurd K jær and likely designed by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen.

Thin-walled footed bowl glazed in mottled shades of brown, with a light coloured rim. Base is impressed with SAXBO Denmark, Saxbo's Zodiac sign Cancer shopmark, model number (3) and size number (IV) as well as the four dots thrower's mark of Sigurd Kjær. This bowl is a 1950s production of a popular 1930s Saxbo form & glaze. A wonderful collector's item of mid-century modern Scandinavian design.

Condition:
In excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or damage. There is a small glaze skip on the underside near the foot, this is from production and is not a chip (see pictures).

Measurements:
7.8cm tall x 16cm diameter = approx 3" x 6.25"

Other Scandinavian bowls shown in last image.

Saxbo Pottery was established in 1930 by Nathalie Krebs and was one of the world's leading woman-owned and directed workshops. Eva Staehr-Nielsen joined Krebs in 1932. Krebs developed the glazes and Staehr-Nielsen created the shapes. In 1949 Krebs began using the now recognisable shopmark of the Zodiac Cancer sign (Krebsen), which alluded to her name.

Several generations of Danish potters worked there and helped to establish the classic Saxbo style of simple stoneware shapes and Asian style glazes. Sigurd Kjær worked at Saxbo from 1949 until the factory closed in 1968.
