Vintage porcelain op art 'Pollo' vase, designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal. Made in Selb, Germany in 1970s.
Rosenthal studio-linie Germany marking on base identifying the production date. This bud vase form is from his 'Pollo' series (meaning 'Chicken' as the shape of the vase suggests). With a narrow opening and raised beaded design around the neck this iconic series comes in three sizes, this is the smallest. The surface is matte white bisque porcelain, the interior is glazed. Beautiful collector's item of nordic design! A collectible piece of the German Op Art pottery movement.
Condition:
In excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or damage. Some very subtle surface marks. Stands tilted to one side (see pictures).
Measurements:
9cm tall x 12cm wide x 9cm deep = approx 3.5" x 4.75" x 3.5"
Small circular 1cm opening.

One of the great Scandinavian Modernist designers, Tapio Wirkkala’s influence was felt far afield, and he worked in nearly every medium from glass to wood, and metal to paper. He was driven by a deep love for Finnish flora and fauna, and the natural landscape that contains it. He was employed by Rosenthal in Germany from 1956-85 where he explored ceramics as a medium. The Pollo series is his most recognisable from the era.
German porcelain company, Rosenthal was founded in 1879 as a workshop for the decoration of white porcelain by Philipp Rosenthal in the town of Erkersreuth in Selb. The company began to manufacture porcelain itself in 1891. From the very outset Rosenthal was a company that pointed the way ahead with its forms and décors. The close work with famous designers and artists since the early 1950’s had a major influence upon Rosenthal’s further development and the company was the first porcelain manufacturer to become a pioneer for contemporary, modern product design.
