The original Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factory was founded by Carolus Magnus in Hohenburg, Bavaria, in 1814. A second factory was established by his son Lorenz in Selb, Germany, in 1857. Lorenz had not partnered with his father and the two companies remained fully independent and in open competition with each other for more than a century but in 1969 the two became one when the Selb company purchased the assets of the Hohenburg factory. The company was renamed Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb. The mark changed through the years, but the name and the lion insignia appear in most versions which helps to date the pieces. Hutschenreuther became part of the Rosenthal division of the Waterford Wedgwood Group in 2000.
